Parkdale's big debut in the Championship

Championship new comers Parkdale were off to a great start in the top grade with a stunning win over Bentleigh. Parkdale 5/278, with English recruit Ben Draper (103*) from South Wilts CC leading the way, well supported by openers Greg Galloway 55 and Hayden Callahan 53 chasing down the reigning Premiers Bentleigh 9/275(cc) (R Ciccarella 84) with 10 overs to spare.

Last year’s Championship MVP Tom Smith started the season with 76 and 4/35 as Bonbeach 9/206(cc) defeated McKinnon 117. The Sharks Andrew MacKessack with 5/24, Smith with some lucky left off’s in his innings but a solid team effort and a strong win to kick start their season.

Beaumaris opener James Lynch 106* had the northern Sharks season off to a solid start, the game called after Beauie had faced 51 overs, and at 4/198, comfortably passing Carnegie’s 176 from the week before (A Bhatt 65; C Watts 5/20). Along the way Lynch and opening partner Neil Minto(67) set a new club record for the 1st XI opening partnership, their 152 eclipsing the previous record of 108.

Whilst South Caulfield set their season up, closing the day off early reaching 5/253 in 60 overs (E Bradley 83, K Alvitigala 52*) easily accounting for Hampton’s 186 (H Allen 58, D Forbes 58; J Curtis 6/48).

In Division 1 Aspendale after winning Division 2 were off to a solid start with a win over Mentone who collapsed losing 6/12 to hand the Dales a first up win. Aspendale 248 (L Hulett 113) defeating Mentone 197. Murrumbeena out of the blocks with a win 9/219(cc) (B Kruger 98) def Bayside 8/177 (R Perera 51, B Mcmanus 50*). Old Mentonians 3/232(cc) (D Meyer 112*, R Everett 73*) comfortably accounted for the Chelsea 158; and the Dragons kicking off with a win, Brighton District 5/143 (R Stewart 65) def Middle Park 7/142(cc).

In Division 2 Cheltenham on the winners board earlywith 8/187 (N Ellery 64) and deating Bentleigh 176 (T Gill 51). Clayton District 8/202 (J Sajenko 56*) defeating Hampton 187. Port Melbourne 337 (T Dale 195, B Will 68; D Eden 5/41) def Parkdale United 133 (O Bocking 6/13) and 3/141 and South Caulfield 307 (J Restarick 59, D Wijeratne 57) defeating Mentone 299 (C Duffy 73, D Haycroft 65, A Fauzdar 52; C Souter 5/41).
