Bonbeach's drought is over
Date of Event Cricket Southern Bayside: Thu Feb 7, 2019 7:54AM

Despite the extreme heat, Bonbeach were by no means a fish out of water on Sunday. The Sharks claimed the Championship Division White Ball Premiership and broke their 1st XI premiership drought in a tight contest against South Caulfield.

South elected to bat and were immediately on the back foot as Bonbeach's bowlers ripped through the top order to leave them 6/21. However, some lusty hitting from Kanishka Alvitigala (61*) gave his fellow bowlers a chance by setting a target of 105. Bonbeach found themselves staring down the barrel at 6/68 after Bradley Erasmus (4/31) silenced the home crowd. However, opener Sinuka Dulaj (65*) partnered with Jason Chapple (10*) to guide the Sharks home.

Murrumbeena's captain Brad Kruger (95*) showed why he is the reigning Division 1 MVP as he guided his side from trouble to take out the Division 1 premiership. Having been set 175 for victory thanks to Mentone's Matt McCallum (43*), the Beena were in trouble at 3/16, but Kruger ensured he was able to get set at the crease before unleashing a tirade of boundaries as the finish line came into sight.

Clayton District captured the Division 2 premiership on the back of a dominant spell of bowling by Shawn Street (6/16) who tore through the Parkdale United line-up to dismiss the Pythons for just 67.

Other White Ball Premiers were:
Division 3: Carnegie (here)
Division 4: Heatherton (here)
Division 5: Kingston Hawthorn (here)
Division 6: Parkdale United (here)

Saturday afternoon saw a few teams surge into finals contention and cement themselves in the box seat for a home final.

South Caulfied, Bonbeach and Beaumaris all consolidated their places in the Top 3 of the Championship, whilst Carnegie leapfrogged Bentleigh to claim fourth position after falling just short of an unlikely outright victory.

In Division 1. Mentone remained on top after a last over victory against Brighton District chasing down the 286 target. Aspendale locked in a finals appearance after beating Bayside outright and Murrumbeena consolidated their position in second. However, it was Middle Park (231) who pulled off the surprise of the round by dismissing Old Mentonians for 198 and lifting themselves from the bottom of the ladder.

Unfortunately, due to the extreme temperatures which were forecast for Sunday, all CSB Women's matches were abandoned.
